Controller
Job Summary
The Controller will assist in preparing financial statements to summarize and forecast Newcomer Funeral Service Group’s financial status and ensure the company is following all regulatory and accounting guidelines under the supervision of the Chief Financial Officer. This position is responsible for identifying and preventing discrepancies and setting up control systems to ensure consistent operations of the Accounting Department.

- Prepare, examine, or analyze accounting records, financial statements, or other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards.
- Ensure compliance with internal controls and policies to comply with legislation and establish best practices.
- Participate in and prepare interim and year-end audit schedules.
- Maintain and balance subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, posting, reconciling transactions; resolve discrepancies.
- Utilize accounting software, approved AI-enabled productivity tools, and reporting automation to facilitate processes, maintain records, improve financial visibility, and gain efficiencies in field locations.
- Use trending, variance analysis and other analytic procedures to ensure each location’s monthly financials are accurate.
- Use relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations or company standards.
- Be a visible leader promoting teamwork.
- Regularly engage with divisional leadership and funeral home associates to provide best in class customer service.
- Create and maintain operational reporting from the accounting system.
- Identify errors; suggest and implement solutions and/or methods to improve efficiency.
- Identify practical opportunities to responsibly apply AI, automation, and analytics to account reconciliations, variance analysis, monthly close, reporting workflows, and exception review.
- Review, validate, and document AI-assisted outputs before use in financial reporting, audit support, compliance activities, or management communications.
- Maintain awareness of confidentiality, data privacy, security, and record retention requirements when using AI-enabled tools or handling company financial information.
- Partner with IT, divisional leadership, and operational teams to improve data quality, dashboards, workflow automation, and exception reporting.
- Assist with maintaining fixed asset records.
- Complete and submit sales tax forms monthly, quarterly and annually for multiple states.
- Prepare and file property tax reports for multiple states.
- Working knowledge of AI-enabled Microsoft 365 tools, including responsible use of Copilot or similar tools for analysis, summarization, drafting, and workflow improvement, preferred.
- Data literacy with ability to interpret, validate, and communicate insights from ERP reports, dashboards, analytics, and AI-assisted outputs.
- Ability to identify appropriate AI and automation use cases while applying professional judgment, confidentiality, and internal control standards.
- Familiarity with Power Query, Power BI, or similar reporting and automation tools, preferred.
- Perform other business related duties as assigned.
- Light housekeeping to keep the facilities and grounds in perfect order. This includes keeping work areas tidy, picking up litter on the grounds and general straightening up.
Educational and Skill Requirements
- 4-year College Degree in Accounting or Finance, required
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA), preferred
- Minimum five (5) years demonstrated accounting experience
- Great Plains Accounting Software experience, preferred
- Public accounting experience with an emphasis in audit, preferred
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- Working knowledge of M365 Copilot
- Good people skills with ability to relate to a wide range of people
- Detail oriented with strong organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment
- Ability to ensure work is complete and accurate
- Ability to manage time effectively in order to organize and prioritize workload
- Ability to work under time constraints and conform with established schedules and deadlines
