Cemetery Grounds Superintendent

Job Summary


The Grounds Superintendent is responsible for the overall care, maintenance, appearance, and operational readiness of two cemetery properties. This position provides daily leadership and supervision for a team of ground associates, ensuring cemetery grounds, memorialized areas, buildings, equipment, and related facilities are maintained to the highest standards of safety, appearance, quality, and service. This role serves as a key partner to cemetery and funeral home leadership in delivering a respectful, welcoming, and well-maintained environment for the families and communities we serve.


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  4. Lead, coach, and develop a team of grounds associates across assigned cemetery locations, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork.
  5. Plan, prioritize, and oversee daily grounds maintenance operations to ensure cemetery properties are maintained to the highest standards of appearance, safety, and care.
  6. Coordinate burial, entombment, and memorialization activities while ensuring accuracy and compliance with all cemetery policies and procedures.
  7. Perform and oversee landscaping, mowing, tree care, irrigation, snow removal, construction, and general property maintenance.
  8. Operate and supervise the safe use of equipment including backhoes, tractors, mowers, dump trucks, and other grounds maintenance machinery.
  9. Ensure company, safety, and regulatory requirements are consistently followed, including proper equipment operation and use of personal protective equipment.
  10. Manage equipment, tools, supplies, and vendor relationships to support efficient operations and preventative maintenance programs.
  11. Maintain accurate records, reports, maps, logs and operational documentation.
  12. Partner with company, cemetery, and funeral home leadership to deliver a respectful, welcoming, and well-maintained environment for families and visitors.
  13. Maintains equipment/tools through proper care and maintenance.
  14. Performs the essential functions of the job without posing a direct or indirect threat to the health and safety of others.
  15. Light housekeeping to keep the facilities and grounds in perfect order. This includes keeping work areas tidy, picking up litter on the grounds and general straightening up.



Education and Skill Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of grounds maintenance, landscaping, cemetery operations, construction, parks maintenance, or related experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
  • Valid Drivers’ License and satisfactory driving record. MVR's will be monitored for compliance, and any conviction or at-fault accidents should be immediately reported to management. 
  • Experience operating and maintaining commercial landscape, excavation, or construction equipment.
  • Ability to operate equipment with both standard and automatic transmission.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage priorities, and solve problems effectively.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 


Work Environment

  • This position requires exposure to weather and temperature extremes. It has an average exposure to chemicals and fumes and associate must be aware of workplace safety hazards. Overtime may be required.
  • This position works primarily outdoors and is exposed to dust, pollens, noise, fumes and odors. 


Physical Effort

  • This position requires normal physical mobility (movement from place to place); agility (movement while in place); balance; coordination and endurance to handle routine maintenance materials and tools. 
  • This position requires above normal physical strength with the ability to handle up to 75 lbs individually and over that with assistance. Performs bending, squatting, kneeling, climbing, twisting, crawling and reaching both to ground level and overhead.
  • This position is subject to working in awkward positions and periods of prolonged walking or standing.
