Cemetery Groundskeeper

Job Summary

This position performs unskilled and semi-skilled routine groundskeeping, maintenance and general labor tasks for the care, maintenance and repair of the cemetery grounds and nearby funeral homes. This position may work alone or with other grounds staff and is required to use appropriate safety procedures and equipment in completing all duties.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  3. Performs a variety of manual labor tasks associated with the maintenance, repair, construction, cleaning, operation of cemetery facilities, grounds, and other funeral home property, assuring safety and professionalism.
  4. Cuts, trims, and edges grass around cemetery facilities, grounds, and other funeral home property.
  5. Picks up limbs; rakes leaves and grass; cleans, weeds, and waters flowerbeds; and trims trees and shrubs as directed.
  6. Assists in planting and caring for flowers and shrubs.
  7. Loads, unloads, and maneuvers a variety of materials and equipment from trucks such as granite headstones, limbs, leaves, packaged materials, recyclables, and ground compactors, and places or piles in designated sites.
  8. Picks up paper, trash, debris, etc.; sorts recyclable materials; and places in dumpsters or other designated containers.
  9. Sweeps sidewalks and shovels snow as needed.
  10. Scrapes, sands, primes, and paints using brush, roller, or airless spray gun for general painting needs.
  11. Ability to identify gardens, lots & grave spaces.
  12. Operates dump trucks, pickup trucks, farm tractors, and other equipment with standard or automatic transmission and power takeoff control.
  13. Utilizes power push mowers, riding lawn mowers, electric and gas-powered trimmers, chain saws, brush chippers, hand tools such as rakes, hoes, shovels, clippers, saws, etc.
  14. Performs routine operator maintenance on equipment, such as cleaning, oiling, lubricating, etc. assuring timeliness and safety.
  15. Reads and applies instructions on mixing chemicals, equipment operation and maintenance, etc.
  16. Assists skilled craft workers, mechanics, and other maintenance personnel in construction, maintenance, and repair activities.
  17. Utilizes appropriate safety equipment and procedures.
  18. Maintains records and logs for activity reports, hours worked, supplies used, etc., assuring for accuracy.
  19. Performs related work as required.
  20. Identifies and reports maintenance needs of equipment.
  21. Performs the essential functions of the job without posing a direct or indirect threat to the health and safety of others.
  22. Remain up to date on company learning, policies, and procedures as assigned.
  23. Light housekeeping to keep the facilities and grounds in perfect order. This includes keeping work areas tidy, picking up litter on the grounds and general straightening up.

Work Environment
This position requires exposure to weather and temperature extremes. It has an average exposure to chemicals and fumes and must be aware of workplace safety hazards. Overtime may be required. This position works primarily outdoors and is exposed to dust, pollens, noise, fumes, and odors.

Physical Effort
This position requires normal physical mobility (movement from place to place); agility (movement while in place); balance; coordination and endurance to handle routine maintenance materials and tools. This position requires above normal physical strength with the ability to handle up to 75lbs individually and over that with assistance. Performs bending, squatting, kneeling, climbing, twisting, crawling, and reaching both to ground level and overhead. This position is subject to working in awkward positions and periods of prolonged walking or standing.


  • A high school education or GED.
  • Possess a valid Kansas Drivers’ License (CDL preferred) and meet the driving performance standards as determined by management.  MVR’s may be reviewed annually for compliance, and any conviction or at-fault accidents should be immediately reported to management.         
  • Experience:
    • Grounds Maintenance I – The job can be learned in weeks or months.
    • Grounds Maintenance II – A minimum of 12 months experience in the construction, maintenance, and repair of cemeteries, parks, and/or grounds required.
  • Principles, procedures, and equipment involved in the construction, maintenance, cleaning or repair of parks, grounds, public roads, or other related projects.
  • Ability to operate equipment such as backhoes (required for Cemetery Maintenance II position), riding and farm tractors with PTO implements, dump trucks, snowplows, salt spreader, mowers, hand and power tools, and vehicles in a manner consistent with safety principles.
  • Ability to operate equipment with standard or automatic transmission.
  • Ability to deal effectively and courteously with associates and the public.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
