From neonatal care to cardiovascular research, the Piedmont Triad is home to some of the best health care facilities in the state. With an aging population Guilford County had the most centarians in the state in 2000 health care is one of the leading facets of the area’s economy. To serve its elderly residents, the Triad offers numerous nursing homes that provide different levels of care.
Established in 1911 as a trust from Bertha Lindau Cone, the Moses Cone Health System was named after her husband, the founder of the Cone Mills textile company. Today the system operates five hospitals, three nursing homes and numerous other services for the Triad community. With a staff of 7,400 including 800 private physicians and dentists, the system is one of the leading employers in the Triad region.
As the flagship hospital of Moses Cone Health System, Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital is a 535-bed teaching hospital located on a 63-acre campus just north of downtown Greensboro. In addition to its medical and surgical services, the hospital also includes the Moses Cone Heart and Vascular Center, the Level II Trauma Center, the Rehabilitation Center and the Neuroscience Center.
In 1917, the Wesley Long Community Hospital opened as a 20-bed clinic and has since developed into a 204-bed hospital. Wesley Long Community Hospital is also part of the Moses Cone Health System. Along with 24-hour emergency service, the hospital offers prompt treatment through a center called Fast Track. The Moses Cone Health System Regional Cancer Center is located at Wesley Long Community Hospital, which also has a diabetes treatment program, surgery center and specialized unit to help patients transition after surgery.
As the state’s first hospital dedicated solely to the treatment of women, the Women’s Hospital of Greensboro is a 134-bed hospital that specializes in obstetric and neonatal care in addition to medical and surgical services. The facility offers a Level II and Level III neonatal intensive care unit and an education center to help new and expecting mothers.
Considered one of the top academic medical centers in the country, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center operates 1,298 beds for acute care, rehabilitation and long-term care. America’s Top Doctors listed the medical center as 33rd in the nation for top-ranked physicians in 2005.
For more than 100 years, High Point Regional Hospital has served the Triad area. Established in 1904, the 384-bed hospital blends state-of-the-art technology with compassionate care. In fact, High Point Regional was one of 100 hospitals in the national recognized by the American Nursing Association for offering the highest level of excellence in nursing and patient care. The hospital is operated by more than 275 physicians representing over 30 different specialties.
High Point Regional’s Cancer Center opened in 2003 with 18 inpatient beds with rooms that include kitchens and extra room for patients’ families. The center brings comfort to its patients through the use of water and nature imagery and soothing colors. A recent partnership with Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center’s Comprehensive Cancer Center will allow High Point patients to participate in clinical trails and undergo specialized procedures.
Another significant addition to High Point Regional is Carolina Regional Heart Center, which opened in 2001. The facility is dedicated solely to providing outpatient cardiac services in prevention, physical care, diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation. Covering 132,000 square feet and rising five stories, Carolina Regional Heart Center is located on the campus of High Point Regional on Elm Street.
The 847-bed Forsyth Medical Center and 136-bed Medical Park Hospital in Winston-Salem are operated by Novant Health. The two facilities conduct more than 40,000 surgeries per year, mostly on an outpatient basis.
In Burlington, Alamance Regional Medical Center provides state-of-the-art technology for its patients and includes Edgewood Place, a new nursing home. The hospital was named to Solucient’s Top 100 Hospitals for performance improvement in 2005. The BirthPlace at Alamance Regional opened its new Level II/Level III neonatal nursery for high-risk newborns in 2006. Alamance Regional has also added and expanded facilities in Elon, Mebane, Yanceyville and Burlington.
Smaller communities also benefit from excellent health-care facilities. Randolph Hospital in Asheboro was established in 1932 with just 40 beds. Since then, it has grown to include 145 beds and provides an emergency department, inpatient/outpatient services, maternity care, intensive care, rehabilitation, home health care, educational programs and screenings.
In Eden, Morehead Memorial Hospital is a 108-bed hospital that also offers a cancer center and a breast center. As part of its occupational heath services department, the hospital visits businesses in the area to educate employees about ergonomics and immunization programs.
