T he Piedmont’s mild climate and moderate terrain make golfing a yearlong activity in the Triad.
Ideally located between the mountains and beach, the area is home to an abundance of public and private golf courses fully equipped with wide fairways, sand traps, bunkers, elevated greens and beautiful scenery. With its prevalence of affordable courses, the Triad is considered one of the best urban golfing areas in the country.
|Built on large, rolling hills and elevated greens, Greensboro’s Forest Oaks Country Club was recently renovated for $3.5 million by Davis Love III. Maintaining the distinction of the design, the improvements create a more diversified landscape, similar to the original Ellis Maple design of the course more than 40 years ago.
Golf fans will appreciate that Forest Oaks is also the site of a long-held Greensboro tradition – the Chrysler Classic. Held annually since 1938, the Chrysler Classic is the oldest on the PGA Tour. The tournament, previous held in the spring, was moved to October in 2003.
Located southwest of Greensboro, Grandover Resort features a 4 — star-rated, 36-hole golf course that has been recognized by Golf Digest as one of the best places to play. Spread over 1,500 acres, Grandover also offers resort living with single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and homesites located on one of its golf courses or with views of the course. A luxurious resort hotel and conference center attract visitors from across the Southeast.
Southwest of Winston-Salem in Clemmons, Tanglewood Park features two 18-hole courses and is considered the best public golf facility in the state. The park is the home of the Senior PGA Tour RJR Championship and was the site of the 1974 PGA Championship. Robert Trent Jones designed Tanglewood Park’s Reynolds Course, and Golf Digest ranked its Championship Course among the 25 best public courses in the country.
On the banks of the Yadkin River lies Salem Glen, designed by the Glen Day/Nicklaus Design Group. The public course, which offers two distinct nines, is diverse in its challenges and is an ideal course for both the avid golfer and the beginner.
If you’re looking for a day trip, Pinehurst – considered the “Golf Capital of the World” – is located only about an hour’s drive from the Triad in the Sandhills of North Carolina. With gentle, sloping hills that are perfect for golf, Pinehurst features more than 40 championship courses in its vicinity.
