Educating Our Children
As development in the region continues, new schools are being built and old schools are being renovated to accommodate the growth.

The Lake Wylie area includes Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Gaston County Schools and York County, which is split into four different school districts. Most Lake Wylie area residents who live in York County fall into the Clover and Fort Mill districts.

Clover School District (York #2)
Serving the areas of Clover, Bethel and Lake Wylie, the Clover School District instructs about 5,600 students in grades kindergarten through 12. In addition to its regular classroom curriculum, the district offers programs for gifted and talented, English as a Second Language students and Bright Beginnings, which provides enrichment and education for families for children from birth to PK.

Crowders Creek Elementary/Middle School Complex, off S.C. 274, serves Lake Wylie students in grades PK-6.

To handle the increased growth in student population, the district recently purchased land off Highway 557 to construct a new middle school.

Clover High School is well-known for its academic achievements, but its students excel in extracurricular activities such as the student newspaper, culinary arts program and marching band, which are recognized as some of the best programs in the region.

One of the district’s highlights is the 1,500-seat Clover School District Auditorium, which hosts school performances and community events.

Fort Mill School District (York #4)
As the fastest-growing school district in South Carolina, the Fort Mill School District serves more than 7,300 students in five elementary, three middle and one high school. Springfield Middle School is brand new for the 2006-2007 school year, and a new high school – Nation Ford High School – will open in time for the 2007-2008 school year.

Off S.C. 160, Gold Hill Elementary School and Gold Hill Middle School serve Tega Cay and surrounding neighborhoods.

In Baxter Village, Orchard Park Elementary opened in 2001 and has quickly grown to over 800 students.

Currently serving the entire district until the new high school opens in August 2007, Fort Mill High School has just over 2,000 students in grades 9-12. It boasts the second-highest SAT score in South Carolina with 1,064 – a number 71 points higher than the state average.

CHARLOTTE-MECKLENBURG SCHOOLS
As the 23rd largest district in the country, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools educates nearly 130,000 students in 154 schools and is recognized as one of the top urban school districts in the country.
Open in August 2006, Winget Park Elementary, located off Shopton Road near The Sanctuary and Berewick, was built primarily to serve the burgeoning area along N.C. 49 between Steele Creek Road and the lake.

On Erwin Road, Lake Wylie Elementary School educates more than 1,300 students in grades K-5. Its attendance zone is bound by Steele Creek Road, Westinghouse Boulevard and the South Carolina state line. Lake Wylie Elementary has been named an Honor School of Excellence for the past three years, which means that at least 90 percent of its students are at or above grade level.

Students living north of Westinghouse Boulevard attend Steele Creek Elementary. With about 1,200 students, Steele Creek Elementary is located near Kennedy Middle School and Olympic High.

Located off Steele Creek Road, Southwest Middle School serves the area southwest of Westinghouse Boulevard. The rest of the Steele Creek area is served by Kennedy Middle School, which is a partial magnet school for Leadership and Global Economics.

With about 1,560 students, Olympic High School serves the entire Steele Creek area and is also a partial magnet for Leadership and Global Economics. The school was ranked 104th in Newsweek’s list of the top 900 high schools in the country.

GASTON COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Belmont area is part of Gaston County Schools, which serves 33,000 students in 53 schools.
Most elementary-school students living on the Belmont peninsula attend New Hope Elementary off New Hope Road. With 400 students, New Hope Elementary was named a School of Distinction in 2005, which means that at least 80 percent of its students are at or above grade level.

On Central Avenue, Belmont Middle School serves about 700 students and was also named a School of Excellence in 2005. South Point High School off South Point Road serves about 1,300 students. Thirty-seven percent of South Point’s instructional staff hold advanced degrees, and nearly 85 percent of South Point graduates go on to higher education.
