Welcome to Lake Norman
It’s hard to believe now, but the Lake Norman area wasn’t considered to be a great place to live when the lake was first created in 1963. In fact, the majority of people who leased lakefront lots at that time from Duke Power’s Forestry Department – at a rate of $120 a year – used them as campgrounds.

Few would have even considered living at the lake year-round. Difficult access to area cities, very limited amenities and utilities, and scarce grocery stores and restaurants made it tough for the average person to see the region’s potential.

With the completion of Interstate 77 in the ’70s and the slow, but steady, increase in paved roads, water lines and telephone service, attitudes began to change in the early ’80s.

By the early ’90s, with the addition of such communities as Governor’s Island in Denver, The Peninsula in Cornelius and River Run in Davidson, Lake Norman had become one of the Charlotte region’s most desirable places to live. This trend has continued with the recent additions of Birkdale Village in Huntersville, the Point in Mooresville and many other fine communities.

With a little help from this publication, we hope that you will take advantage of the constantly evolving Lake Norman scene.
