Golf
The Lowcountry is home to some of the finest golf courses in the country and appropriately so, since the first golf course and club in America was in Charleston.
In 1776, The South Carolina Golf Club and Harleston Green were established in what is now downtown Charleston. While Harleston Green has since faded, golf courses and clubs are not lacking in the Lowcountry. Charleston is home to more than 35 championship courses designed by greats such as Pete Dye, Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Rees Jones and Gary Player. With ocean fairways, holes along marshlands and courses carved out of oak and hickory forests, golfers will always have a wide variety of golf challenges.
As the starting point for many golfers, the City of Charleston’s Public Golf Course opened in 1929 and is also referred to as “The Muni.” As one of the few walkable golf courses in the Lowcountry, it remains a traditional early 20th-century golf course with occasional upgrades. Designed by Johnny Adams with Seth Reynor, characteristics make the course continually challenging. Over 60,000 rounds a year are played annually at “The Muni.” Every year, the South Carolina State Championship is hosted here and it remains the home of the Charleston City Amateur.
