Colleges And Universities
The Charleston metro area is home to numerous institutions of higher education, ranging from large public universities to smaller private schools to technical and community schools. It is also home to one-of-a kind schools such as the prestigious Citadel and Medical University of South Carolina.

Located in historic downtown Charleston, The College of Charleston is the 13th oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. This public liberal arts school’s core curriculum maintains its focus on language, English, history, science and the humanities.

The College of Charleston offers 46 majors and 82 minors within its six schools: the School of Arts; the School of Business and Economics; the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs; the School of Humanities and Social Sciences; the School of Education; and the School of Sciences and Mathematics. There is also an expanding graduate school at The College of Charleston with a newly added communications program. The college urges all of its students to participate in its study abroad programs.

The gorgeous location of this historic school makes it a top choice for students from all over the world. Some 200 international students attend The College of Charleston, representing 72 foreign countries. Over the last few years, the school’s enrollment has been limited to just under 10,000 undergraduates in order to maintain a 14:1 student-to-teacher ratio.

The Citadel, founded in 1842, is a coeducational military college with a rich history. All of The Citadel’s nearly 2,000 students are a part of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. Graduation rates are among the highest of four-year schools in South Carolina at about 60 percent.

Throughout the tough first year, cadets learn lessons in teamwork, self-discipline and time management. Despite the everyday physical fitness training, cadets are encouraged to take part in athletic competition in the school’s 28 intramural sports, 15 intercollegiate club sports and 17 NCAA Division I sports.

While only a third of graduates go on to the armed services, all cadets go on to participate in an ROTC program. The Citadel has many alumni who have achieved notable success in military, government, business, sports and other areas.

Since 1964, The Medical University of South Carolina has expanded from a small private college to a state university with seven hospitals and six colleges in the different areas of health education. With two new state-of-the-art research facilities and two more planned, the Medical University is one of the leading biomedical institutions in the Southeast.

The school’s six colleges include Graduate Studies, Medicine, Nursing, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy and Health Professions.

In 1825, a group of Charleston attorneys began what was called The Forensic Club – a place where they could provide lectures on law. This began the South’s oldest law school tradition which is now Charleston Law School.

Charleston Law offers a rich three-year program in the city which is known as the Four Corners of Law. The goal of the school is to teach the practice of law as a profession with its chief aim to provide public service.

As an affiliate with the South Carolina Baptist Convention, Charleston Southern University’s mission is to promote academic excellence in a Christian environment for all faiths. Located near historic Charleston, Charleston Southern is one of South Carolina’s largest independent universities with about 3,000 students.

This private school offers 32 undergraduate majors and several graduate programs. Each program’s main focus is designed on developing problem-solving and communication skills.

Charleston Southern offers intercollegiate athletics for both men and women in the NCAA Division I Big South Conference. Teams include basketball, baseball, softball, women’s soccer, cross country, track and field, golf, tennis and volleyball, as well as a Division I-AA football team.

With the goal to be the leader among two-year colleges, Trident Technical College creates diverse and innovative education programs and services. With new opportunities for higher learning, Trident Technical helps the economic, social and cultural life of the surrounding community.

Each semester approximately 12,000 students enroll in programs, many of which lead to college transfer degrees and technical associate degrees, diplomas and certificates.

Students publish their own Trident Times newspaper. There are over 40 student groups on campus which include Greek organizations, career-linked clubs, and organizations with religious affiliations.

With locations in Charleston, Columbia and Richmond, Beta Tech focuses on providing adults higher education degrees and diplomas. With a fast track and affordable program, adults can finish school in areas such as computer support, networking, medical assisting, computer administration, legal assisting and paralegal law.

Because of the difficulty adults can have when returning to school, Beta Tech cooperates with the lifestyle of a working adult, offering day and evening classes.

Located in Orangeburg, South Carolina State University has served students since 1896 and is one of the country’s pioneers in providing African-American students with baccalaureate degrees as well as one in three South Carolina colleges that offers a doctoral program in Educational Administration.
